About Gensum

Gensum exists because there was a gap nobody was filling, and hardly anyone was even talking about. AI tools are brilliant at making images and video, and strangely quiet about what each one costs until the credits are already gone. This is the tool I wanted at the start of my own project, and the one my students needed.

The gap

Students do not have an expense budget.

In a studio, someone owns the budget. There is a producer, a line item for software, and a card to top up when a project runs long. Students have none of that. They have one plan, often paid for out of their own pocket, and a fixed pool of credits that has to last the whole month.

The tools do not help. You pick a model, write a prompt and hit generate. The cost shows up after the fact, and the most impressive model is usually the first one you see. By the time the balance starts to drop, half the project is still unmade.

Where the credits go

  1. The best model by default

    It is the first one you try, and it can cost five or ten times more than a model that would do the shot just as well.

  2. Retakes nobody planned for

    Most shots take more than one try. Every try is charged, and almost nobody budgets for them.

  3. Finding out too late

    Credits run out mid project, and the rest of the work waits for next month or for money you did not plan to spend.

  4. Free offers that quietly end

    Some models are free on your plan for a while, then switch back to full price. The same shot can cost nothing one week and 75 credits the next.

  5. Credits that do not roll over

    Monthly credits reset each cycle. What you do not use is gone, and what you overspend cannot borrow from next month.

  6. Prices that change under you

    Plans get restructured. Thor's World would have cost $17.72 on the old Premium+ pricing. Today it costs $33.22.

Why I built it

An educator who hit the wall first.

I teach AI in design, helping students bring these tools into real creative workflows. Before asking them to make films with AI, I made one myself: Thor's World, a 2 minute 37 second short starring my dog, Thor.

It used 74% of a month's credits, and I could steer it because I already knew the pricing. That is what I teach my students: what to watch for, and how to budget a project before they generate. But if you have not taken my class, or you are still new to AI, none of it is obvious. You start on the best model, watch your credits disappear, and then either stop or pay for more out of pocket.

So I built the planner to put that lesson in anyone's hands. List your shots before you generate, see what they will cost, and find out whether a cheaper model can do the same job.

What it solves

Plan first, so more of your credits end up on screen.

The goal is simple: more finished assets from the same credits. Less spent on trial and error, more of the budget in the final cut.

  1. See the cost before you spend

    List your images and clips and get the total in credits and dollars, measured against the credits you actually have left.

  2. Find the model that fits

    Compare every model that can do the same shot, ranked by price, so the expensive ones become a choice instead of a default.

  3. Budget for the retakes

    Rerolls are built in from the start, so the plan matches how making things really works.
